An independent trustee can provide additional technical support and expertise to the Trustee board and hence assist them to comply with the many statutory requirements which now govern the management of trustee based pension schemes.  As well as adding value to the scheme management, an independent trustee can provide additional comfort to the scheme members.

Schemes in Winding-up

Winding up an occupational pension scheme can be a very complex and lengthy process.  It will also often be treated as a relatively low priority by the incumbent pension consultants/administrators of the scheme who may be less interested in the scheme following the decision to wind-up either because it has effectively become a "lost" client or because the winding-up process requires special skills and knowledge which they may not possess.  An independent trustee with practical experience of the winding-up process from both the actuarial and administrative perspectives can therefore provide an essential independent input during this process.
